Course objective & result

This SIR course is intended for Pressure/Vacuum Operators who are required to hold a valid SIR certificate to perform their work. As an operator, you are responsible for the execution, supervision, and communication related to pressure and vacuum operations.

During the course, you will learn how to fulfil this central role within the team in a professional manner and fully in accordance with the SIR guidelines. After successfully completing the examination, you will receive the official SIR Pressure/Vacuum operator certificate, which is valid for five years.

Target group

This course is intended for employees who are responsible for operating the pressure/vacuum unit and supervising pressure/vacuum assistants.

 

Course objective

A Pressure/Vacuum operator independently operates the pressure/vacuum unit, ensures safety, and coordinates the work. Safe working practices are essential to prevent (serious) accidents.

This pressure/vacuum course prepares operators for their central role within the team, in line with the latest SIR guidelines, including:

  • Recognising risks
  • Working safely with pressure/vacuum equipment
  • Safe cooperation when working with pressure/vacuum equipment

 

Learning outcomes

After completing this pressure/vacuum course, an operator is able to:

  • Assess and apply permits to work
  • Correctly position and earth the pressure/vacuum unit
  • Instruct colleagues and safely organise the work area
  • Recognise malfunctions and resolve them safely
  • Understand and supervise work in confined spaces and ATEX zones

 

Qualification

By completing this pressure/vacuum course and successfully passing the examination, participants obtain the SIR High-Pressure certificate.

Layout

  • What does the SIR Pressure/Vacuum Machine Operator (DVM) course look like?

    This three-day course covers both theory and practice of working with pressure/vacuum equipment in accordance with the latest SIR guidelines.

     

    Theory

    • Risks: physical, physico-chemical, chemical, and process related risks
    • Permit to work: document defining safety requirements
    • Intermittent suction: technique to limit dust emissions
    • Explosive atmospheres: situations where gas or dust may ignite
    • Behaviour and communication: essential for safe execution

     

    Practical

    During the course, participants practise:

    • Use and inspection of pressure/vacuum hoses and components
    • Correct execution of an LMRA (Last Minute Risk Analysis)
    • Operation of auxiliary pumps, gas scrubbers, or vapour recovery systems
    • Logbook registrations and maintaining correct documentation

     

    The SIR examination

    • The course is concluded with a theoretical and practical examination in accordance with SIR guidelines
    • The full final and assessment requirements are published on the SIR website

    In possession of a valid VCA Basic, VCA VOL, or equivalent qualification

     

    In possession of a valid PVO certificate or a PVO certificate expired less than 6 months, or a Pressure/Vacuum Assistant certificate valid for more than 3 months

     

    Bring PPE required for core Pressure/Vacuum Operator tasks

     

    Presentation of a valid original identification document prior tot he examination

     

    Completion of the Pressure/Vacuum Operator course (5 half-day sessions)

     

    Sufficient proficiency in the exam language, both spoken and written

    €110 excl. VAT for participants from SIR-affiliated companies

  • Classroom-based

    This course is delivered in a classroom setting at our location in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. During the course, you will work in a small group under the guidance of experienced trainers from the field.
